A good camera upgrade can still lose the argument. The AppleInsider Podcast spends much of an hour and a half on the iPhone 18 Pro, calls it a tick year worth having, and still ends with one host planning to buy an 18 Pro only to test it, return it, and wait a month for the iPhone Duo.
The case rests on the camera itself. The main camera's variable aperture runs from f/1.48 to f/4, by the show's count, with four fixed stops in Apple's Camera app, and the hosts expect it to matter mostly up close: more background blur wide open, friends in focus behind a selfie at f/4. Everywhere else, the bet is that 18 Pro and Duo photos will look nearly identical. One host's Photos library backs the telephoto half of that, with about 200 telephoto shots out of thousands in a year and only a dozen or two that needed the reach.
On the show, the Duo's compromise list comes out short. No Face ID, so Touch ID with an Apple Watch fallback; MagSafe that charges but won't fit existing MagSafe wallets and batteries; a polymer inner screen that will crease.
The Apple Watch segment lands on the Live Rewind and Siri Recap privacy question: one host buys Apple's case that neither keeps a recording, and the other isn't so sure.
iPhoners who want Siri AI gone get a practical tip early on: Settings, Screen Time, Content Restrictions, then Siri, where Siri classic and per-feature switches for Writing Tools and Image Playground live. The hosts would rather you left it on.
First-gen hardware is for early adopters, and the Duo already has one here. Everyone else gets a tick year the show says it would buy outright if the Duo didn't exist.
