Choose a year and let it play. Cassette is a home-video player for iPhone and iPad that turns a calendar year of clips from your Photos library into one continuous tape. A small television sits above a shelf of labeled cassettes; albums get their own tapes too.

Tap a tape to load it, then tap the television for full-screen playback. The next clip starts automatically, with date and location information over the picture. You can skip a clip, shuffle the selection, or share and favorite something you want to keep close. The Take Me Somewhere button chooses a starting point when you don't have a particular trip or year in mind.

MacStories describes the pleasure as a matter of presentation: the playback tools are familiar, but the tape metaphor encourages a longer look through old footage. Daring Fireball makes a similar case for letting a whole year's clips run. I think that's the useful part for iPhoners whose camera roll contains dozens of tiny family moments they rarely replay.

  • Cassette reads videos from the device's Photos library.
  • AirPlay mirroring lets the playback move to a nearby screen.

A US App Store reviewer points out the limitation for a Google Photos library: videos stored there don't automatically appear in Cassette. I'd check where the older footage lives before planning a family viewing session.
