"You lust after it. You must have it." That's the Cult of Mac podcast on the Apple buying cycle, and the iPhone Duo is the test case: an 82-minute episode in which four of its regulars admit they want the Duo and can't produce a reason to need one. The buying question comes last and lands on one flat no, two undecideds, and one Duo pre-order justified as review duty.

The case for it is software. The podcast lingers on the toolbar that slides to the right edge on the closed phone and on the poses that turn a half-fold into a mini laptop or a bedside clock; the camera mode that plays Snoopy animations on the outer screen for kids gets an aside. But the case against is habit. An iPad mini already covers the reading and a 17 Pro Max the phone. The panel called the missing telephoto and the lack of spatial photos near deal-breakers.

One consensus on the iPhone 18 Pro: the variable-aperture demo sold the phone, burgundy sold nobody. The argument is over Apple Watch's Audio Intelligence. Live Rewind shows the last 15 seconds of a conversation as text, Siri Recap summarizes the day's talk, and the objection is that the people around the wearer never agreed to be transcribed; the counter comes from a panelist with hearing loss who wants exactly that. Readiness and Health Age get a colder read: Apple's small print limits the Vitals app to wellness purposes, and the panel's advice is to trust your body first.

Apple's release has Live Rewind and Siri Recap arriving in beta, English first, with iPhoners in the EU not initially included. The Duo's dates are firmer, pre-orders October 16 and shipping October 23, and the undecided can keep rationalizing until the 16th.
