Max Tech again, this time with a pry bar and a 3D printer's heat bed standing in for a heat gun. The first finding is the one I'd want to know before buying: the iPhone Duo's matte inner screen comes from a film, and it peels off in a single strip. Under it the subpixels look sharper. The channel still doesn't recommend trying it, since the bare panel scratched almost at once and the reflections came back.
What Max Tech counted
| Smaller battery | About 1,921 mAh, 7.5 Wh |
|---|---|
| Larger battery | 2,962 mAh, 11.57 Wh |
| Both together | 4,883 mAh |
| Hinge | Over 100 parts |
The folding screen
- Flex test. Full-strength pressure bent the phone slightly the wrong way before the plastic frame came off.
- Ultra-thin glass. Two layers, both shattering in the channel's fingers once separated and flexed.
- Under-display camera. It looks through a hole cut in the panel, and its sensor is close in size to the 12MP Center Stage cover camera. The channel's theory for the reported 4MP output: display pixels block most of the sensor.
The body
- Batteries sit one in each half; the smaller one shares its side with the logic board.
- The vapor chamber is much smaller than the one in the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Graphite tape covers the rest and wraps up to the camera module.
- The main camera is closer to the iPhone 17's sensor than to a Pro's, by the channel's reading, with magnetic stabilization around it.
- The speakers don't match: the top driver is visibly bigger than the bottom one, so more of the sound comes from the top.
- The back glass carries the MagSafe ring, and every glass surface is scratch-resistant.
Repairs are where all that packing cuts the other way. Max Tech scores the Duo's repairability at basically zero against other phones, and sums up the afternoon in one line.
This is a pain to take apart and get access to the internal parts.
Whether an Apple Store can replace a scratched matte layer without opening the phone is the question the teardown leaves open, and for most owners it's the repair they're likeliest to need.
