No regular iPhone 18 walked out of the September 9 event, and Matt Talks Tech's twelve-leak rundown opens with the reason: the split-lineup reports held. The channel expects the base iPhone 18 in March or April alongside the iPhone 18e, and MacRumors' roundup has the same spring window with a second iPhone Air in the trio.
What arrives then is, by the channel's reading, mostly the iPhone 17 again: the same body two generations running, two 48MP cameras without the Pro's variable aperture, ProMotion kept, and a couple of new colors. The two carry-overs from the Pro are the Dynamic Island, about 25 percent smaller and able to show three Live Activities, and the A20, a 2nm chip with memory on the package. The channel's guesses are labeled as guesses: a sixth GPU core, around 20 percent more CPU, three or four extra hours of video. Wired stays at USB 2 speeds and wireless at Qi2, with faster charging a maybe.
The durable upgrade is the modem. The iPhone 17 kept Qualcomm while the Air and the 17e got Apple's C1 chips; the 18 should move to the C2, which Apple rates at 15 percent less energy than the C1X, with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 alongside. That's more than the US iPhone 18 Pro Max can say.
Pro features trickle down, and this list is the trickle: the island and the modem, six months late. The price of the iPhone 17 line went up after the event, per the channel, and it expects the 18 to land at that level. iPhoners waiting for the base model are waiting for a modem and a smaller notch, and should decide whether that beats a discounted 17 this fall.
