No Face ID and no telephoto lens: those two facts decide most of the 11 verdicts in iGeeksBlog's iPhone Duo buyer guide, with six buys, four skips, and one that depends on how you use an iPad mini.

The rest of the spec sheet is friendlier: the Duo opens to 5.2 mm with IP68 intact, weighs 254 grams, and Apple rates it for up to 31 hours of video on the inner screen.

  • You wanted a foldable but never meant to leave iPhone. iMessage and the Watch carry over, and you gain a second, bigger screen.
  • You read and travel more than you shoot. The matte inner screen kills most glare, though colors look a touch flatter than on a glossy iPhone, and the matte layer is part of the display, so no screen protector.
  • You work from your phone. Split View runs two apps side by side, and Apple lists USB-C Apple Pencil support as coming. Two apps is the hard limit.
  • You film yourself. The main 48MP camera can frame you on the outer screen, at up to 4K 120 fps in Dolby Vision.
  • You play story and strategy games. The near-square inner screen letterboxes most wide games, so competitive players lose more than they gain.
  • You're leaving a Galaxy Fold. You gain IP68 against the Fold 8's IP48 and stylus support the Fold 8 dropped, and give up three-app multitasking while carrying about 50 grams more.

iPhoners who carry an iPad mini get the split verdict. If the mini is mostly for reading, the Duo replaces it; if you want full iPad apps, keep both. Federighi has pitched the iPhone Duo as an iPad mini stand-in, and the video draws the line at those apps.

Skip it, per the video

  • Photography comes first. 2x is a crop of the main sensor and digital zoom stops at 10x, while the 18 Pro reaches 8x at optical quality and keeps ProRes and Log.
  • Face ID is a habit. Touch ID covers Apple Pay and app logins; you lose the glance-to-unlock.
  • Budget comes first. This skip is about cost alone, and the store page carries the live numbers.
  • You want a light phone or low risk. No one knows how the crease and hinge age over two years, and the inner screen carries its own repair fee even with AppleCare.

The last skip is the one I'd weigh hardest: my rule for first-generation Apple hardware is early adopters only, and a hinge is the part I'd want a second round of. Preorders open October 16, and the Duo reaches stores October 23.
