"As a first-generation foldable, Apple really came out swinging," MacRumors says of the iPhone Duo, in a hands-on filmed the day before pre-orders opened on October 16. The detail it keeps returning to is the nano-texture finish on the inner screen, which cuts glare and makes the crease hard to see. On that count the video puts the Duo ahead of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 out of the gate.

The rest of the spec sheet backs up the first impression. Both screens run ProMotion and always-on at up to 3,000 nits outdoors, the frame is titanium with Ceramic Shield 2 and IP68, and the phone ships with iOS 27.1. It also takes eSIM only, in every country.

What the fold changes

  • Battery life depends on how much you open it. Each half has its own cell, and Apple rates 44 hours of video on the outer screen alone, 31 on the inner, and 24 split evenly. MagSafe charges at up to 25W, and a wired charger reaches 50 percent in about 20 minutes.
  • Cameras are a 48MP Fusion main and a 48MP ultra wide, with a 12MP Center Stage camera on the outer screen and an under-display camera inside. MacRumors calls them good but short of the iPhone 18 Pro.
  • The outer screen as a preview lets the person in the photo frame their own shot, Smart Take fires once everyone in a group is ready, and Kid Queue plays animations to hold a child's attention.
  • StandBy works half-folded in a tent position without a charger, and an alarm wakes you with a soft glow from the inner screen.
  • Split View runs two apps side by side, with a three-dot bar to pin one while you work in the other. Duo FaceTime lets someone next to you join a call from the outer screen.

Inside, the A20 Pro is the same chip as the iPhone 18 Pro, with Apple claiming up to 35 percent faster performance than the 17 Pro, and the C2 modem adds millimeter wave in the US. The iPhone Duo Get Ready step covered the ordering side; MacRumors adds that early assembly yields were reportedly only a little above 60 percent.

What to know

  • Apple Pencil support for both screens isn't there at launch, and only the USB-C Pencil will work.
  • How the hinge and crease hold up after months of use is the open question MacRumors saves for its full review.
  • Two colors, Star White and Night Sky, and four storage sizes from 256 GB to 2 TB.

The eSIM-only rule is the one I'd check before anything else. iPhoners who travel on local physical SIM cards will need carriers that issue eSIMs at every stop, and that's a habit to test before October 23, not after.
