The touch-screen MacBook Pro has a date range again, and it got shorter. Bloomberg, as MacRumors relays it, says Apple is testing 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with touch-enabled OLED displays on macOS 27.1, a release scheduled for late October, and the laptops now sit on its list of products coming later this year. Until now that reporting put them as late as early 2027, the window in the October product roundup.
The rumored spec sheet hasn't moved: M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, a thinner body, and a Dynamic Island where the notch sits now. They're pitched as a tier above the regular 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro, and the MacBook Ultra name that circulated this summer is still unconfirmed.
macOS Golden Gate reached everyone on September 14, and the first 27.1 developer beta is expected within days, which makes it the next place to look. A developer already noticed this month that Liquid Glass renders glassier on high-end OLED panels with HDR in the Golden Gate beta. MacRumors read that, cautiously, as groundwork for these laptops.
The catch is the silicon. The OLED models carry M5 Pro and M5 Max while the regular MacBook Pro line is expected to move to M7 Pro and M7 Max, per MacRumors, so the premium tier is premium on the screen and a generation behind on the chip. Anyone buying a MacBook Pro this fall picks between the newer chip and the new display, and Apple has made that a real choice.
