Apple has two small screens on the October calendar, and one of them folds. The iPhone Duo ships October 23, and Bloomberg expects an OLED iPad mini by the end of the same month, which makes Craig Federighi's answer to MKBHD this week sharper than it sounded.
Federighi's first answer leaned on habit, the way people already split tasks between an iPad and a Mac. Then he conceded the part 9to5Mac led with: for someone who once carried an iPad mini, the Duo "can often fill that... that space for them." He has been reading on it open in portrait for months. His other line is the caveat Apple wants heard: "Yeah, it is, but it's not an iPad," meaning the open layout grows out of the phone's front screen instead of a stretched tablet app.
October makes the overlap literal. The rumored mini moves to an OLED panel of about 8.4 inches, per MacRumors, against the Duo's 7.6-inch inner screen, with a newer A-series chip and full iPadOS. That's the same iPadOS whose windowing the iPhone Duo split screen sidesteps with a simpler two-app view.
The interview's own host doesn't buy the full swap. In the same video that carried the iPhone Duo as an iPad mini stand-in, MKBHD tells iPhoners who already carry an iPhone and an iPad mini, and like both, that the Duo probably isn't for them; its buyer is the iPhone owner who has been curious about foldables for years.
Federighi's "often" is the word doing the work. Pre-orders for the Duo open October 16, and the mini, if the timing holds, lands within days of the foldable in stores. Anyone replacing an iPad mini this fall can hold both before choosing.
