Edge Light again, ten months after macOS 26.2 introduced it, and this time the screen doing the lighting folds. MacRumors reports that the iOS 27 release candidate carries code for the feature tied to a device subtype that resolves to the iPhone Duo, found by a developer who has been picking through Apple's recent builds.
On a Mac, Edge Light turns the border of the display into a ring light for video calls: any Apple silicon Mac on macOS Tahoe 26.2 or later, any video app from FaceTime to Zoom, with two sliders for brightness and warmth. The Neural Engine finds your face and the image signal processor sets the light level for the room, per Apple's support page.
The Duo is the iPhone that needs it. Its inner selfie camera sits under the 7.6-inch panel with no cutout, the arrangement that made the iPhone Duo hands-on look so clean, and the compromise those cameras make is image quality. A screen the size of an iPad mini wrapped around a compromised camera is the exact problem Edge Light was built for, and the exact surface it needs. A 6.3-inch iPhone with a good front camera has neither.
What's in the build is unfinished: the color temperature control isn't fully wired, MacRumors notes, and nothing says whether the feature ships with the Duo on October 23 or reaches the 18 Pro at all. The developer's earlier finds in Apple's code have held up. Read it as a Duo feature until Apple says otherwise, and as the first sign that the foldable's software will keep patching what its hardware gave up.
